Precious Lucky
My name is Otite Precious Lucky and I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, and a Master’s degree in Environmental Science from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. My academic and research interests have been shaped by early observations of how human activities can compromise the safety of food and water, often resulting in chronic illnesses and preventable deaths caused by exposure to chemical and environmental toxicants. Many of these toxic exposures remain undetected until advanced stages, further emphasizing the need for deeper scientific understanding and intervention.
An interest in human toxicology began during undergraduate studies through coursework in pathogenic bacteriology, particularly in understanding how lysed bacteria can release toxins in humans without direct infection, because of oxidative stress induced by antimicrobial agents. This experience, combined with undergraduate research in food-borne infections, inspired a growing research focus on nanotoxicology during graduate studies in environmental science. Through these academic experiences, it became evident that understanding the fate, behavior, and effects of toxicants within biological systems, while important, is often insufficient to address the most pressing public health questions. Instead, meaningful progress requires a deeper mechanistic understanding of how toxicants interact with human biological pathways and contribute to disease outcomes.
Driven by a commitment to connecting real-world environmental exposures with mechanistic biological outcomes in humans, I am enthusiastic about the interdisciplinary and intellectually rigorous structure of the Human Toxicology Program. The program’s welcoming, engaging, and problem-solving-oriented environment strongly aligns with both professional aspirations and research goals. Beyond academics and research, the kitchen serves as a second laboratory. Time outside the classroom is often spent developing cake and pastry recipes, listening to inspirational music, taking walks, singing alongside piano accompaniment, and reflecting on personal and professional goals.
