The Admissions Committee of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Human Toxicology seeks to identify qualified students to enter the Program. Applications from individuals with disabilities and individuals from underrepresented groups/minorities are encouraged.

Criteria for admission are chosen to select students who are likely to be successful in the Program, and will include:

  1. A minimum undergraduate GPA higher than 3.0, or the demonstration of success in graduate work, in fields of study within the scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, physics, engineering and the health-related disciplines
  2. For international applicants, a minimum TOEFL of 600 (paper) or 100 (Internet based). As an alternative to taking the TOEFL, the IELTS may be taken. The IELTS total score must be 7.0 with no subscore less than 6.0.
  3. At least three letters of reference that reflect positively on the potential of the candidate for success in graduate studies.

Generally successful applicants will have attained a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the sciences or engineering, and are well prepared to successfully negotiate the Program curriculum.

Applications to the Human Toxicology PhD Program are submitted via the University of Iowa Graduate Admissions System, an electronic application system that streamlines the admissions process for Ph.D. training programs.

You will receive a username and password that will allow you to return to work on your application over several sessions. Your information is transmitted through a secure server and is kept confidential until you submit your application.

An application will be evaluated when the following items have been received:

Checkmarking a list
  1. Payment of the application fee of $60 ($100 for international students)
  2. Upload unofficial transcripts to the application
  3. Submit three letters of recommendation via the application
  4. Self-report TOEFL or IELTS test scores results on the application (foreign students)
  5. Research Experience

The electronic application system transmits your file directly to the Human Toxicology Admission Committee for evaluation.

Deadline

The Admissions Committee will begin reviewing applications in late December. Applications will be accepted after that time but will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Please note that related programs of study in the Department of Occupational & Environmental Health may be found on their website. These include M.S. & Ph.D. programs in Occupational and Environmental Health. A formal subtrack in Industrial Hygiene is also available.

Occasionally we have one opening for the Spring Semester. If there is an opening for the Spring semester then the application deadline would be November 1 (Applications will be accepted after that time but will be reviewed on a rolling basis).

Checking Application Status

You will be able to check the status of your application materials online by utilizing the username and password provided to you by the application system. Please check your application status frequently and follow-up with the appropriate person(s) to facilitate the timely submission of the required materials.

Interviews

Selected Candidates are invited for an on-campus interview and will be contacted by email. Interviews are not conducted prior to submission and evaluation of an application. Travel costs within the United States will be covered by the Human Toxicology Program. Interviews allow applicants the opportunity to measure the quality of the program, the research interests of our faculty, visit with graduate students, and decide if his or her research interests are a good fit with the institution. Interviews are usually scheduled from early February until the end of March.

Admission

Applicants selected for admission will be notified by the committee. Once official transcripts are received, the admitted student will receive an official letter of admittance from the Human Toxicology Program.

Financial Support

All Toxicology Program graduate students are fully supported and will receive stipends, tuition, and a health insurance allowance. Students may be supported as research assistants with funds from the Graduate College or they may be supported by training grants and other grants. Stipend support is renewed based on satisfactory progress toward the degree.
